
Michael is an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) practitioner who has a total of 20 years of experience in the mental health profession.
By using a combination of the robust research base of CBT with the individualistic approach to care from integrative therapy, Michael uses his breadth of experience to tailor packages of psychological care to meet individual needs when working with people suffering from common mental health problems. Typical issues that Michael works with include trauma (PTSD), panic, generalised anxiety, OCD, health anxiety, social anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.
In terms of history and experience, Michael moved into the area of psychological care from an original starting background in the visual arts. Whilst working first with adults, then adolescents with special educational needs he trained for five years in an integrative approach to counselling. After qualifying he worked for 11 years in several NHS Trusts and the private sector in counselling roles, wherein his working approach centred on the value of the therapeutic relationship to understand problems and construct strategies to improve wellbeing. During this period he also completed a part-time degree in psychology before undertaking post-graduate specialisation in CBT. Having practiced CBT for a subsequent 9 years, Michael has also trained in EMDR.
